BARRIER METHODS

Contraceptive methods - Male condom

Male condom

A thin, elastic sheath placed on the erect penis before penetration. When the male ejaculates, the sperm remains inside the sheath, preventing semen from entering the vagina.

Female condom

A thin, transparent sheath inserted into the vagina before penetration so as to cover the penis during intercourse and contain the semen.

Diaphragm

A soft latex cup placed in the woman's vagina before sexual intercourse that adapts to the cervix (neck of the womb) and creates a physical barrier to sperm.

Copper IUD

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small device made of plastic and copper, generally in a T-shape. It measures between 2.5 and 3.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. It is inserted into the uterus through the cervix to prevent pregnancy and is worn permanently by the woman.

Pill

SURGICAL METHODS

Tubal ligation

Consists of cutting or blocking the fallopian tubes to stop the egg from reaching the uterus, thereby preventing fertilisation. The surgery is performed in the operating theatre under general anaesthesia and takes about 15 minutes.

Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a definitive, fast and minimally invasive birth control method performed with outpatient surgery in less than 30 minutes.
