Experts in endometriosis standardise criteria to promote joint studies
Transvaginal ultrasound is the method of choice currently used first-line in the diagnosis of deep endometriosis, and to determine not only its location, but also the extent of involvement of the different pelvic organs (ovaries, bladder, bowel and rectum). Ultrasound findings are key in determining the therapeutic approach in each case. However, comparing the studies that have been published in this field is often difficult, as the authors use different terms to describe the same structures and their anatomical locations.
This is why an interdisciplinary group of thirty experts in the study, treatment and diagnosis of deep endometriosis, all of them members of the International Deep Endometriosis Analysis group and including Dr. Maria Angela Pascual, Head of Department and Director of R&D+i in Gynecological Diagnostic Imaging at Dexeus Women's Health participated in a study to establish a set of agreed guidelines in order to standardise the nomenclature and measurements used by experts in the diagnosis of this disease.
The authors who led the consensus, Dr. Stefano Guerriero from the University of Cagliari (Italy) and Dr. George Condous (University of Sydney, Australia) drafted an initial proposal based on the protocols established by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), which was sent to all other participating experts for individual review. Taking into account these reviews and with the support of Dr. Dirk Timmerman, another participant, Drs. Guerriero and Condous prepared a new proposal specifying consensus positions in cases where there was a divergence of opinion. After a total of 13 revisions, the document was eventually unanimously approved and the proposals presented are now freely available online in Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The initiative aims to facilitate comparative analysis of studies conducted in this area in the future, as well as collaboration between the research centres conducting the studies.
